Kids in The Kitchen Homemade Chips

Hi everybody! Welcome to this weeks edition of Kids in the Kitchen! What Lu and I made this week was so SIMPLE! Don't you love how an idea comes to you, a recipe that you might of seen before or whatever, and you look it up and without hesitating you make it, theres no grocery trip ... no scavenger hunt through the pantry, you know you got the ingredients and thats that! Well thats how these Homemade Chips were for us, I thought they would be fun, looked them up, and was like VOILA! Theres my kids in the Kitchen post! Now I know its only 2 ingredients so I am cheating a bit, because everyone has cheese and tortillas at their house ... but atleast give me credit LOL! I think I am waiting for our schedules to fall back into place after school has started, but it hasn't yet, I feel like I've left my brain else where .... so my planning skills are out the door, I use to make an extra special shopping trip just for the stuff to make for my KITK post now welll... you see! But atleast thats saved me a grocery run and I use up what I already had!
I think these homemade chips are fun, versitile, and a great afternoon snack, I am sure they are so much more healthy than store bought, if your not like us and use WAY to much cheese! Not to mention Lu had a blast, she thinks it was great fun cutting shapes and she told me she could do this ALL by herself and she was so proud!
Homemade Tortilla Chips:
Take a tortilla shell and have your child make shapes with the cookie cutters
Once Lu figured it out she was on a roll. First she was pressing the cutters really hard, and then pulling the tortilla shell away from the shape, then she figured out if you press the cookie cutter and move it back and forth a little, then the shape pops right out!
Shred the cheese, Lu did do this by herself, with close supervision, I didn't want her to cut herself, however she insisted that she could do it! Usually when we cook dinner she ask to shred the cheese and I let her just for a min and take over, I think sometimes though, you just have to trust they can do it, and watch closely!
Spray both the cookie sheet, and the tortilla chips with non stick spray. This is what our chips look like before the cheese went on!

Then on goes the yummy cheese, now I am assuming if you were to skip this step and put a little lime juice and a pinch of salt, it would be a much healthier version. I am going to try that version soon, I would like to see how good it tastes eating healthy chips! Pop them in a preheated 375 degree oven for 5-7 mins *that is the reccomended time, next time though I think I will watch them closely and try for 12-15 mins for the extra crunch, because the edges were nice and crunchy but some of the middle was a little soft still.

Straight out of the oven, some ooey gooey cheese goodness! They did have the crunch like a chip, I wish I would have left them in the oven just a tad more. They were good though, so nice and simple to make such a *CUTE* snack, something for the whole family! Joshy liked them too!
*Please grab my button and join in by adding your link to Mr. Linky, It could be anything from how you get your kids to eat thier veggies, to cooking with them, kid friendly recipes, or cookbooks, snack or lunch ideas ... anything thats related to kids and food! See you all again next Thursday*
I found another blog that has a Simply Made Sunday meme (very cute blog too)... I know this week I've double dipped with my meme and hers, but I wasn't prepare, however next week I will be!

  1. I love this idea. Of course, I would be eating all of the "left over" tortillas edges :)
